New Holland Island is an 8-hectare military port in the center of St. Petersburg, that has been closed to the public for the last 300 years. Instead of introducing new architectural elements, Work AC’s winning proposal worked with subtraction. Through carving from the existing warehouses, large public voids were created. These cultural and educational voids’ are connected through an elevated promenade the leads through all the existing warehouses bringing the outdoors inside.
